Linux & Graph Analysis

Some new data I recently found, along with an idea I had for a controversial piece of research and a very interesting meeting with a colleague has re-ignited my interest in graph analysis. I will take a brief breather from my work on Web Services to worked on the following idea. Having worked and published about the structural integrity of Linux, I decided to study its evolution by attempting to model its development process.

Recent papers about the modelling process of open source have proved valuable in building models to predict how they may structurally evolve. I will be using the "preferential attachment" method to roughly estimate how a graph (or a class diagram for that matter) given its current structure may evolve. I then plan to compare this set of simulations against the real structure of the various kernel versions of Linux. I am currently looking for such versions as I am only in pocession of 2.

I got some very useful guidelines from Mel G. for which I am very thankful for. I will keep people informed with my experiments and since I have referenced everyone, i should say that the .gif courtesy of my mate Steve L. although the appearence doesn't do it justice.

Easter being and gone.

zoi-jesus-tb (11k image) Well as ever, Christ is safe back in the heavens enjoying eternal hallelujahs (if you are a catholic that is, orthodox easter is next sunday) while the rest of us mortals are getting ready to go back to work. Easter weekend is over and I am proud to say that I did nothing apart from enjoying a much needed rest. I still haven't managed to catch up with all my emails, and I still need to disseminate calls for conference papers, for which I'm a committee member. I will catch up with emails, phonecalls and meetings this week.

It wasn't all rosy though this long weekend. Unfortunately, I spent the entire morning on the side of a busy road waiting for AA (that is AAA for American readers) after my car gave up on me on the way to get the morning paper. Eventually, after 130pounds and 2 hours trying to locate and fix the damage I had to be towed to a garage. Probably devine intervention I guess in return for all my blasphemy :-)

On the plus, side I found out about a 2nd publication for this to which I brielfy contributed relating to my work on analysing the structural characteristics of Linux. The paper is mainly writen by 2 colleagues and can be found inside these proceedings. It is on page 90 of the 3rd Volume. I am expecting the results of another paper this month and if this 3rd one is also successful it will mark the most successfull month in terms of published work. Note to self: Speak to publisher about the prospect of publishing my Linux work in one of their journals.

*Note: On behalf of Dr. Zoidberg I apologise for offending any Christians.

Publication

I was pleased to hear of the acceptance of the paper: "Benefiting from misbehaving Servents in Unstructured Peer-to-Peer Networks",
I co-authored with another NCL colleague for the COPS'06 P2P workshop. The workshop takes place in Manchester in June. We had to wait a bit longer for the results (they were due out last week) but word -although unofficial- finally arrived that the paper had been accepted. Either myself or George.P. or both will be there to present it. I have been working, mostly as a hobby, on P2P networks for a long time now and this is at last some form of recognition given that the particular conference only accepts very few papers each year. This is also my first paper in the area. George informs me that the revision of another Journal paper that we submitted last year is also undergoing which is also good news.

UK is getting ready for the Easter weekend and so am I. Both tommorow and Monday are bank holidays which means I'll be out of the office.

Dr. Who

I found out last night that the new Dr. Who series is finally being launched on BBC next Saturday the 15th of April. Following the success of the last series this one has been greatly anticipated, so i look forward to it. I 'd forgoten how big a fan I was until i saw the new trailer. American fans will have to wait for a little while to see it although last year's series is on the sci-fi channel. While looking for a .jpg to decorate the blog i came across this ipod ad which I found really funny.

AHM 2006 DEADLINE

The DEADLINE for this year's All Hands Meeting is less than 4 weeks away. As a member of the committee I am simply exercising my duty of disseminating the call for papers. It should be noted that unlike the previous years, contributions should be in the form of full papers and NOT abstracts. Unfortunatley I did not have time to prepare a Security workshop as I did last year. But I am contemplating organising a workshop at the ICSOC2006 event along with some of my colleagues for later this year.

April Fool's

I took a couple of days away from Newcastle towards the end of this week mainly to sort out personal business. On friday afternoon i found myself in the middle of the Bastille demonstrations as I was heading for an esresso just opposite the opera. Hundrends of students were protesting about the CPE law and dozens of police men were on the streets trying to control the crowds; although the protest was in all peaceful. It reminded me of my years in school and the demonstrations we used to get involved. Anyway I'm briefly in London on Sunday and I got tickets to see a play adaptation of the book "one flew over cuckoo's nest" with Christian Slater. I remember seeing him on Broadway this time last year along with Jessica Lang. He is doing a 10 week run of the play (i understand it also run for a brief period last year). I also got a chance to see the film V for Vendeta which is a screen adaptation of an Alan Moore comic. It was really captivating and unlike the last Alan Moore comic adaptation which was really childish (League of extraordinatry Gentleman) this one really did justice to the original story. Nobody has played any April fool jokes on me today but its only early.
