Back to Reality

Returned to work today after (what felt like) a long break. I enjoyed the holiday experience overall but I won't comment on it until later in the week. I will miss the travelling and being on the road but I guess I have to adjust to sitting on a chair again for most of the day. Ahh!...Have to remember to post my feedback to Explore.

Thanks to the extension of the deadline of the Internet Computing journal it seems that we will be able to make a submission. The paper is almost there although we have hit a disagreement regarding the focus of the introduction. Hopefully it will all be resolved before the 5th.

Im away again on the 9th of december. This time Im going to Bastille for the weekend. Hopefully I will meet my friend Klouk there too. I will update the 2 previous entries and add photos from my holiday soon.

Morocco

Took the train to Algeciras on Monday and from there the ferry, (that was surprisingly decorated with Corto Maltese drawings), across to Tangiers/Morocco. Im enjoying the relaxing, laid back nature of Fez at the momment having visited places such as the tannaries (also check this, this, and this one inlcuding 2 video clips 1 and 2) and the medina. I also paid a visit to the infamous Deans Bar which was also a Hemmingway favourite. Further south we visited the sea side city and port of Rabat including a fortress or kasban as it is called that it apparently also serves as a stop for migrating storks. The trip ended in Marakesh where we enjoyed several meals at the square Jamai Fna.(video of the square)

i hope you like the photos...

Malaga

Got to Malaga airport at noon on Sunday and enjoyed a couple of days at nearby white villages such as Grazalema, Zahara and others build on cliffs (also good picture). I visited an old Bull Ring and several of the sites immortilised in Hemmingway's "for whom the bell tolls", including the famous Ronda Gorge (also nice picture and video (4mb) ).

i hope you like the photos...

Break finally here

After a long and painful journey (5 hours on a train) I arrived at BT at around 12:30, having woken up at 05:00 in the morning. I decided to come to the meeting an hour earlier than my colleagues (our trains actually left Newcastle an hour apart) but somehow we got to BT at the same time. angry, grr Nevermind, the long awaited break is here. I'm setting off to Spain Sunday early in the morning and have promised to myself not to do any sort of work. Well maybe check the report of my colleague Jake just because I gave my word. But that's it. I will update with pictures from Malaga and other places I will visit.
Paper for Internet Computing - check
Paper for iTRust2006 - check
BT talk - check
Code for XACML - check.

I got to get a life!
more soon....

Milestone Reached

The long anticipated paper on GOLD middleware is finally in draft form. It took 6 authors 6 weeks to write 6 confused pages each, to reach this milestone. It leaves us about 2 weeks to edit, review and submit for publication to IEEE internet computing. On Friday I'm going down to Ipswich along with some of my colleagues for half-a-day meeting with BT and then off to Malaga for a few days. I may or may not be able to update my Blog when Im there. I am taking a few days off to relax and I will be visiting a few nearby places by train.

Last week's event

A few people have now asked me via email, what the serious event I mentioned last week was. Sadly a colleague of ours died last week in the early hours of Wednesday morning. Apparently he fell off the top floor of one of the Computer Science buildings. This has been a difficult time for many people (including myself) and our thoughts are with Rumesh's family. His funeral is tommorow at his home town in Malaysia. Yesterday, at the departmental meeting, we all observed a minute's silence to his memory. Some people from the department volunteered and created a Memorial Web Site with pictures and other items in Rumesh's memory. God rest the soul of the little guy.

Longing for a Break

I was really looking forward to the concert last night. I had my tickets already purchased, both for me and my friend, and was looking forward to seeing live an old hero of mine. We made sure that we got in to town early to avoid a possible traffic congestion and find parking near the venue. We did. As we were walking closer to the arena high on excitement and adrenaline a moment of epiphany brings me crashing down....I already knew but wanted to make sure...i take the tickets out of my pocket and on close inspection I realise the concert was on the day before! D'oh

jeans, leather jacket, alice cooper t-shirt, head down, sitting at the bar, lager.

REX MUNDI

I forgot to mention earlier that the new Rex Mundi issue is out. I thought of posting this here as few of my friends are into graphic novels. It contains far more religious controversy than Dan Brown and it's far more plausable too. Note to self: Post a copy to Chris

Work, Work, Work

Spent most of Saturday working on that damn paper that never seems to get finished. Editing, more editing and then editing again. Sadly I still have to work on it today. I 'll probably go to the office for a 'change of scenery'. Saw an advertisement for Factotum which cheered me up, as I used to be a fan of Bukowski's wit. Less than a week to go for my break. more soon..

Blue

I was planning to lighten up the mood of the Blog with some Web items that drew my attention recently, but Im not currently up to the task. We got some bad, tragic rather, news here at NCL yesterday and I dont feel up to it. I will write more about it some other time. On the positive side the security meeting went well, although i realised i have a job in my hands trying to convince my peers about decisions i took in relation to GOLD's architecture. The iTrust paper is shaping up nicely, and the journal paper is getting there slowly but surely. Difficult week ahead, but I get nicely awarded at the end. more soon.

Book Deal

I finally got some good news yesterday regarding the book proposal i bid for, a couple of months ago. Thankfully my bid was accepted and i will therefore be the main editor of a forthcoming book on Web Service Security published by IGI. The book will elaborate on usage of web service standards and specifications, assessing their composability, ease of use, evaluation against real requirements etc.

I will publish the CALL FOR CHAPTERS when i sign the formal contract with IGI. In the mean time if anyone is intereted in participating by contributing a chapter, they can let me know via email. I plan to invite 2 co-editors to help me with this task both with industrial experience as well as referees with practical experience of using those standards.

more on the subject soon....

First Blog: Unofficial Opening

Dear Friends and colleagues, welcome to my blog. Although not entirely there yet (still loads of work to do, broken links etc) i decided to let people know of its existence, as it will give me an incentive to finish off any remaining work sooner rather than later.

The reason for doing this, is primarily to disseminate my work faster and also to keep in touch with colleagues and friends more regularly. In this space i will post about the progress of my work, papers or technical reports that i write, news from NCL as well as non-work related items.

If you are wondering about the technicalities of blogging I should tell you that i personally customised some code i found on the web and i am hosting the blog myself. There are however blogger systems that can host your blog if you dont want to go down the route of doing it yourself. Some of the links as you will notice don't work, as this is still work in progress. Needless to say that for any Private information or requests you should still use my email. HTML entries are accepted. Obsenities are automatically censored although they are welcome via other avenues. rolls eyes

I will try to post every 2-3 days max.

regards
