The week before christmas...

Everyone around here (i.e. friends and collegues) seems to have been given up the idea of doing any work the last week before Christmas and me generally not being eager to stand out I followed suit. I completed my teaching last week for the M.Sc SDIA course and I have been taking it easy (to some extent) since then. I have a lot of traveling to do throughout January and I will spend some of the Christmas break working for that. So I am trying to arrange my flights for Seattle for my meeting with the securiyt team at Microsoft as well as a short visit to New York to see it dressed in snow. :p I will be spending the holidays with family which I am meeting next weekend. That reminds me that i am behind with presents and need to catch up.

Out of the blue, I went to see Iron Maiden which played in Newcastle last night. I don't know what got into me but i did. They played the new album in its entirety which meant that I hardly knew any of the songs and by the time they finished playing those, they only had time for 5 oldies. So was it worth it? Yeah…….

Finally, being a Futurama fan I feel obliged to post this interview by David Cohen about the forthcoming episodes next year. I look forward to those.

New Gibson Book out Soon: Spook Country

Here is some good news at last. William Gibson announced on his blog last month that he has completed his new book which is out next year. I will try (as I did last time) to get a signed proof copy.

It has been 4 years since pattern recognition so it was about time.Good sci-fi books are rare these days so I am looking forward to anything Gibson has to say; although -according to popular belief- his last effort was nowhere near his best work. If you look through his blog entries (specially the ones round summer time you can find random extracts from his forhtcoming book)

Datalog and SecPAL

We have started some experimental work with my Ph.D. colleague on translating access control rules to Datalog. This is our initial attept to create our own interoperable logic based access control PDP (Policy Desicion Point) . We are currently only translating SecPAL (building on the experiences we gained translating XACML to VDM) and further down the road we will discuss possibilities of translating XACML into Datalog too. I plan to feed this work into the existing GOLD security framework for expressing in natural language, validating, and logically representing access control policies. There is a good chance of visiting MS in Redmond at the beginning of next month which will give me a better chance to elaborate on our work here at NCL.

Note to self: I need to socialise more with formalists!

Morrissey gig

The move to my new apartment has been completed. I have moved to the city centre which means no more early wake up calls so that i can get a parking space at the Uni. Christmas still seems very far away given that I still need to finish work for my Book on top of lectures that i have to prepare, papers to submit and projects to supervise. A highlight taht should not go without mention is that I saw Morrissey last night at the Arena. Depressing songs :-) was just what i needed. I used to follow Smith's music in school and i always wanted to see them live. Don't know why it took so long to get to attend one of his gigs, given that I spent part of my late teens and early adulthood in Manchester. Anyway, he played a lot of Smith's songs, his newest single as well some songs from the last album. The downside was that the concert did not last very long. it is in fact the 2nd concert in a row that I attend, where the artist walks off! I dont know exactly what happened but the whole thing lasted about 85 minutes. It was totally worth it.
